Heavy rain can move fast, but preparation does not have to.
The City of Tulsa is inviting residents to get ahead of the next storm at the Flood Insurance & Preparedness Expo on Tuesday, May 5, from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. at the Centennial Center at Veterans Park, 1028 E. Sixth St.
This free come-and-go event is designed to answer the questions many homeowners don't think about until they're dealing with water where it shouldn't be. What does flood insurance actually cover? Am I in a flood zone? What should I be doing now to protect my home?
Behind the scenes, Tulsa's stormwater system works every day to move water safely through the city. The people who manage that system, along with the experts who monitor the weather and flood risk, will be in one place to share what they know and help residents make informed decisions.
Attendees can hear from KJRH 2 News Meteorologist Mike Grogan, National Weather Service Hydrologist Nicole McGavock, and local insurance and stormwater professionals. Information booths will offer practical, one-on-one guidance, and the evening will wrap up with a live Q&A.
Tulsa's continued investment in infrastructure and floodplain management has earned the city a Class 1 rating in the National Flood Insurance Program, the highest possible designation. That work translates directly into savings; residents may qualify for up to a 45 percent discount on flood insurance premiums.
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that flood damage is not typically covered by standard homeowners' insurance. A separate policy is required, and planning ahead makes all the difference.
In addition to educational resources, the event will include hands-on experiences for families. Officers from the Tulsa Police Department's Gilcrease Division will be on site for a "Touch a Truck" experience. The Oklahoma Task Force 1 Swift Water Rescue Team will also bring boats and specialized equipment used during water rescues.
Light refreshments will be provided. In the event of severe weather, updates will be shared online and through local media. For more information, visit cityoftulsa.org or follow the City of Tulsa on social media.
