Press Release
Des Moines, Iowa- Wednesday, April 2, 2025 - As the temperatures rise, so do the opportunities for fun and adventure with Des Moines Parks and Recreation! The 2025 Spring/Summer Activities Guide is now available, and many activities are NOW OPEN for registration, offering a variety of programs, events, and outdoor experiences for all ages.
From youth and adult sports leagues to swim lessons, tennis programs, environmental education, and community events, there's something for everyone. Families can also explore special programming at dog parks, cemeteries, and city-wide recreational facilities.
"We're excited to roll out another season filled with engaging activities that bring people together and make the most of Des Moines' parks and amenities," said Janis Steele, Recreation Manager. "Whether you're looking to stay active, learn a new skill, or just enjoy the outdoors, we have something for you."
Early registration is encouraged, especially for high-demand programs like swim and tennis lessons, which fill up quickly. Last year, nearly 4,000 kids participated in swim lessons, and this summer is expected to be just as busy.
To support these programs, Des Moines Parks and Recreation is still in the process of hiring seasonal staff for a variety of positions, including lifeguards, Summer Camp, and Gray's Lake staff. Longer term, 7-month employment opportunities are also available with the Parks Maintenance division. These jobs offer competitive wages, flexible hours, and a chance to make a difference in the community.
"Working for Parks and Recreation is a fantastic way to gain experience, stay active, and be part of a team that helps create memorable experiences for our residents," said Amarre Negussie, Recreation Supervisor. "If you're looking for a summer job, we encourage you to apply."
Financial assistance is available for youth swim lessons and athletic programs through partnerships with Des Moines Public Schools and the State of Iowa. Families can apply for the GRASP and YRSP scholarships, which reduce registration fees to just $5 for eligible participants.
