CAMP DARBY, Italy - The family of Richard Grams, a Vietnam veteran who in his late years worked at the USAG Italy, DMC Post Gym, gathered at Camp Darby to honor his memory by placing a rose on the memorial for the base's fallen.
The gathering included his daughters, Joyce and Gloria, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The return to Camp Darby, a place rich with family history, was an emotional experience. "It is like a jump in the past for me," said Joyce. She and her sister have fond memories of growing up on the base, spending time at the Post Theatre and the pool. For Joyce, revisiting these familiar places was the "best Christmas present I could ask for."
Grams served as a civilian at Camp Darby until 2014.
According to his daughter Gloria, Grams suffered a heart attack while at work but did not make anyone aware of his condition. He passed away a few days later. This visit marked the family's first time back to the base since his passing, making the occasion a particularly emotional tribute for the multiple generations present to honor their grandfather.
The family expressed their gratitude for the opportunity of the visit and shared their hope to return for future memorial events at Camp Darby.
