NEW YORK - Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Mike Flynn and Lyft today announced the completion of a major Citi Bike expansion, adding more than 230 stations and 3,700 docks across seven neighborhoods in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.
The expansion brings Citi Bike to neighborhoods that previously lacked access to the system. The rollout began in Bay Ridge and concluded in East New York. Since the first stations opened last September, riders in Bay Ridge alone have taken more than 75,000 trips.
"Riding a bike is one of the best ways to get around the city, and expansions like this one help more New Yorkers get where they need to go," said Mayor Mamdani. "We're making it easier for people to get to work and school, make their dentist appointments and take advantage of a museum or concert - and everything else our city has to offer."
"More and more New Yorkers are riding Citi Bike than ever before because bike share is a convenient and quick way to get around the city," said NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn. "We are pleased to have worked with Lyft to provide new commuting options for more neighborhoods in the outer boroughs. The Mamdani administration will continue working to make bike share accessible to more New Yorkers across the city."
"Bringing Citi Bike to seven new neighborhoods in just over a year wouldn't have been possible without our partners at NYC DOT and the communities who helped shape where stations went," said Patrick Knoth, General Manager of Citi Bike. "What matters most to us is who's riding: in Norwood, more than half of trips at the new stations are Reduced Fare trips. That's what it looks like when affordable, sustainable transportation reaches neighborhoods that haven't had it before, and we're committed to keeping it reliable for the New Yorkers who depend on it every day."
The expansion adds roughly 10 square miles of coverage, bringing Citi Bike's total service area to 86.5 square miles. As a result, 62% of New Yorkers now live within the service area. All new stations feature Lyft's Pillar dock, the company's next-generation station design, which offers a modular, versatile addition to New York City's streets.
NYC DOT works with communities to identify station locations that provide safe, convenient connections to neighborhood destinations. Lyft installs, operates and maintains the stations.
NYC DOT and Lyft will continue working to ensure stations are located where riders need them most. This fall, Lyft will deploy hundreds of new docks within Citi Bike's existing service area, adding capacity in high-demand neighborhoods, including Midtown, Chelsea, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Gowanus.
"I am thrilled about the expansion of Citi Bike and what it means for the residents of East New York, as many of them, especially our youth, are using the services," said State Senator Roxanne Persaud. "All New Yorkers deserve to have convenient, affordable and accessible transportation, and this project is a representation of that. I will continue to support the Department of Transportation's efforts to bring all modes of transportation to Senate District 19."
"As a bike rider myself, it's exciting to see transportation options continuing to expand across our city. I commend NYC DOT, Commissioner Mike Flynn, Lyft and the community partners whose work helped bring Citi Bike to neighborhoods that had too often been left outside the system," said State Senator Robert Jackson. "Transportation is more than movement; it is access to opportunity, connection and the freedom to participate fully in the life of our communities. When public infrastructure reaches more New Yorkers, we are not simply adding bike docks to a map; we are expanding the geography of opportunity."
"Expanding Citi Bike across the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens creates a more connected, accessible and sustainable City. As a frequent Citi Bike rider, I am well aware that too many communities don't have the public biking infrastructure we need for every New Yorkers to enjoy a convenient, healthy way to get around," said State Senator Gustavo Rivera. "I commend Mayor Mamdani, NYC DOT Commissioner Flynn and Lyft for their continued partnership to build a healthier, more connected city."
"It's great to see DOT complete this major expansion of Citi Bike," said Assembly Member Robert Carroll. "Mayor Mamdani and DOT Commissioner Flynn are taking the steps needed to ensure a transportation system in New York City that is both sustainable and works for all, and Citi Bike is a key element of this agenda."
"Citi Bike is an essential piece of the micromobility puzzle, and every year, more and more New Yorkers are turning to Citi Bike to get to their destinations," said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. "I am so thrilled that Bay Ridge, Brownsville, Kensington and East New York are officially part of the Citi Bike network with the completion of Phase 3.5. I'm grateful to NYC DOT for supporting this expansion, and I look forward to seeing Citi Bike expand to even more communities across Brooklyn."
"I am delighted that Citi Bike is continuing to expand across more neighborhoods around our city. Every New Yorker deserves adequate access to transportation," said Council Member Alexa Avilés. "Citi Bike opens pathways for our communities and expands how easily people can get around the city. It's a matter of equity and economic justice. I am glad that my office can work with DOT Commissioner Flynn to continue expanding access in District 38."
"Every New Yorker should have access to transportation that gets them where they need to go, no matter their zip code. New Yorkers love micromobility and Citi Bike, and expanding the system will make thousands of daily commutes easier, reduce our reliance on cars and support a cleaner, more sustainable city," said Council Member Shahana Hanif. "We must continue investing in safe biking infrastructure and expanding these options across all five boroughs so every community can benefit from a more equitable, more connected transportation system."
"Every New Yorker deserves to have a Citi Bike station in their neighborhood," said Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. "We applaud the completion of this expansion, and we hope to see this critical mode of public transportation become more affordable, so that more New Yorkers can hop on a bike without breaking the bank."
"The expansion of Citi Bike across New York is a big win for our city. More neighborhoods now have access to crucial infrastructure that connects communities and provides new, and more sustainable, options for mobility," said Sara Lind, Co-executive Director at Open Plans. "Bike share is creating a more livable and vibrant city, and we've seen how incredibly popular it's become. Accompanied by new cycling infrastructure and better curb use, it's helping transform how our city gets around for the better."
"Every New Yorker deserves access to convenient, reliable transportation, regardless of where they live," said Ken Podziba, CEO of Bike New York. "The addition of more than 230 Citi Bike stations across seven neighborhoods in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens is welcome progress, particularly for residents of transit deserts who have long faced challenges getting around our city. We're thrilled to see Citi Bike helping to bridge that gap and introducing more New Yorkers to the freedom, independence and sheer joy of bicycling - a healthy, sustainable way to travel that can truly transform how people experience this great city. We applaud NYC DOT and Lyft for bringing bike share to underserved communities and making it easier for residents to commute to work, run everyday errands and explore their neighborhoods. This expansion brings us closer to a more connected and equitable city - and to the day when Citi Bike serves every neighborhood across all five boroughs."
