Tonko Marks 5 Years Since January 6th Attack on U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Paul D. Tonko (NY-20) today released the following statement on 5 years since the violent attack on January 6, 2021 by insurrectionists on the U.S. Capitol building:

"5 years ago, as Congress gathered to do our constitutional duty and certify the results of the 2020 Presidential election, a violent mob ripped down doors, broke through windows, and beat law enforcement officers to storm the U.S. Capitol building and prevent the peaceful transfer of power. I was sitting in the House Gallery when we were rushed out by courageous Capitol Police, who sprang into action to protect me, my colleagues, and our republic that day.

"Hundreds of those rioters were later tried and convicted; but last year, on day one of his Presidency, Trump pardoned nearly 1,600 of these criminals - a number of whom have since gone on to commit other crimes, including one man who was pardoned a second time by Trump for an unrelated gun conviction.

"In the face of this administration's attempts to erase the horrors of that dark day, I will continue speaking out against any and all attacks against our nation and its freedoms. Further, I will never forget the extraordinary bravery of law enforcement that day to keep the light of democracy alive for us all."
