Hearst Newspapers Expands AI-Powered Property Tax Protest Tool, “TX Tax,” Across Texas

NEW YORK, April 16, 2026 - Hearst Newspapers (HNP) today announced the statewide expansion of its AI-powered Property Tax Protest Tool, "TX Tax," across its Texas markets, building on the product's strong performance at the Houston Chronicle - where it was nominated by the International News Media Association (INMA) for Best Newsroom Innovation - and marking one of the company's first unified, Texas-wide product initiatives.

TX Tax provides homeowners with county-level property data and comparable property information - without offering property tax consulting or representation - that they can use if they choose to challenge their property tax assessments, a complex and often intimidating annual process in Texas. After proving to be a major subscription driver in Houston last year, the tool will debut this spring in Austin, Dallas and San Antonio, extending its reach across Hearst's Texas markets.

TX Tax reflects HNP's commitment to pairing trusted local journalism with practical, service-driven solutions that help readers navigate complicated issues and make informed financial decisions.

"Property taxes are a reality for Texas homeowners, but the process of reviewing and protesting assessments can feel daunting," said Nancy Meyer, president and publisher of the Houston Chronicle. "TX Tax is designed to make that process clearer and more accessible. By putting powerful data and AI directly in readers' hands, homeowners have better information about their property assessments. It's a natural extension of our journalism and a clear example of how we're evolving to meet the needs of our subscribers in new ways."

This Texas-wide rollout also represents one of HNP's first coordinated product launches across its expanded Texas portfolio, demonstrating how local expertise and shared technology can scale across markets while maintaining strong community focus.

The launch will be supported by a coordinated marketing campaign, including pre-launch promotion, waitlist sign-ups and subscriber outreach ahead of the mid-April debut.

For newspaper publishers nationwide, the initiative offers a compelling example of how local media organizations can transform public data and deep community knowledge into premium digital products that drive subscriptions, engagement and long-term brand relevance - without relying on third-party platforms.

HNP continues to invest in innovative products and tools that extend the impact of its journalism and strengthen its connection with readers.
