Ivanović for BIRN: Iceland will not jeopardise Montenegro’s EU membership

Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović stated in an interview for BIRN that a possible decision by Iceland to resume accession negotiations with the European Union cannot jeopardise Montenegro's position in the accession process.

He stressed that Montenegro remains focused on closing all negotiation chapters by the end of 2026, noting that the pace of accession is determined by achieved results and implemented reforms, in line with a merit-based approach.

The Deputy Prime Minister assessed that a possible reactivation of Iceland's negotiations would represent a sovereign decision of that country and a positive signal for EU enlargement policy, without any negative implications for Montenegro's progress.

Speaking about domestic processes, he underlined the importance of maintaining political and social consensus on the European path, alongside continued reforms and strengthening institutional stability as key preconditions for the final stage of negotiations.
