AHN Wexford Hospital Earns 2nd Consecutive 5-Star Rating for Quality, Safety and Patient Experience from CMS

Press Releases Wexford Hospital

Building on its reputation for excellence, AHN Wexford is the only hospital in Western Pennsylvania to receive the highest possible rating for overall quality

WEXFORD, Pa. - Allegheny Health Network's (AHN) Wexford Hospital has once again earned a 5-star rating from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This prestigious designation recognizes the hospital's commitment to excellence and its dedication to providing safe, effective and patient-centered care at the highest level.

AHN Wexford Hospital is the only hospital in Western Pennsylvania to receive a 5-star rating.

In 2025, the five-star CMS rating was more difficult to achieve - 91 fewer hospitals earned a five-star quality rating in 2025 than did so in 2024. Nationally, 291 hospitals received the five-star quality rating, or about 1 hospital in 10. The star ratings are revised annually and were issued by CMS on July 31.

Launched by CMS in 2014, the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating summarizes into a single star rating a variety of measures across five areas of quality, including mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely/effective care. According to CMS, the rating system helps patients to better interpret hospital quality data and more easily make decisions regarding their health care needs. A hospital's rating is based on its performance compared to all hospital across the U.S. The national average star rating is 3 out of 5 stars.

Earlier this year, AHN Wexford Hospital was recognized by CMS for the fourth year in a row as one of the nation's quietest hospitals at night. The hospital also earned five stars in the areas of cleanliness, nurse communication, and the patient's understanding of care instructions when they transition out of the hospital.

In addition to this recognition from CMS, Leapfrog recently awarded AHN Wexford Hospital with an 'A' grade for patient care quality and safety. Updated and published each spring and fall, the 'Safety Grade' report assigns hospitals across the country an A, B, C, D, or F grade based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections, and other harm to patients under their care. Grades are assigned twice annually to nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals.

This second 5-star rating adds to a growing list of awards and accolades for AHN Wexford Hospital, which opened in 2021. Earlier this year, AHN Wexford Hospital was recognized by Press Ganey with a 'Human Experience Guardian of Excellence Award' in the patient experience category for patient experience scores over the 95th percentile nationally. Last year, its emergency department was selected by the Emergency Nurses Association as a 2024 Lantern Award recipient alongside AHN Jefferson Hospital.

"At AHN Wexford Hospital, our priority is delivering an exceptional patient experience built on a foundation of safety and quality," said Allan Klapper, MD, president, AHN Wexford Hospital. "This 5-star rating, along with our other achievements, is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our entire team. We believe our neighbors deserve access to the best possible care, and we're honored to provide that in their community."
