The global insurance community is mourning the passing of Dirk Kempthorne, former President of the Global Federation of Insurance Associations (GFIA) and former President and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI). He passed away on 24 April 2026 at the age of 74.
Governor Kempthorne was widely respected for his leadership, integrity, and ability to bring together diverse perspectives across the insurance sector and public life. He was a trusted advocate for the industry and a constructive partner to policymakers and regulators.
As the second President of GFIA, serving from late 2014 to 2018, Dirk Kempthorne played a decisive role in shaping and consolidating the Federation during its early years. He was instrumental in ensuring continuity following GFIA's creation, strengthening collaboration among member associations, and reinforcing a shared sense of purpose across the organisation. Many within GFIA remember his presidency as formative in establishing the Federation's confidence, credibility, and long-term direction as the global voice of the insurance industry, but even more so, they remember him as a curious, optimistic, open and kind individual, always willing to engage with the people around him.
Our thoughts and condolences during this difficult time are with his family, friends, and all those across GFIA and the wider insurance community who had the privilege of working with him.
