Ahead of Confirmation Hearing, Warren Presses Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Nominee on Sanctions, Anti-Money Laundering Enforcement and Trump Admin Hiring Freeze

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs (BHUA) Committee, sent a letter to Donald Trump's nominee for Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, John Hurley, ahead of his confirmation hearing pressing him on his plans to lead the agency charged with enforcing sanctions, combating money laundering and terrorist financing, and defending the financial system from national security threats.

In the letter, Senator Warren notes that the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence (TFI) has seen its mission grow dramatically in recent years, including expanding sanctions enforcement and oversight of emerging threats such as crypto-enabled illicit finance. Despite the office's critical mission, Mr. Hurley has not previously served in any roles that involved meaningful engagement with sanctions or illicit finance issues.

"(Y)our answers to the questions below and your testimony before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs will be critical to assessing how you plan to lead the national security arm of the Treasury Department," Ranking Member Warren highlighted.

In the letter, Senator Warren also presses Mr. Hurley on whether he would:

• Enforce and modernize U.S. sanctions programs while preventing broad economic harm to civilian populations;
• Fully implement the Corporate Transparency Act and crack down on shell companies used by drug cartels, foreign adversaries, and sanctioned entities;
• Ensure that crypto firms comply with anti-money laundering laws and that Treasury has the tools it needs to mitigate digital asset risks; and
• Protect and strengthen the national security workforce within Treasury amid President Trump's federal hiring freeze.

The confirmation hearing for Hurley on Thursday, April 10, will be an opportunity for Ranking Member Warren and Senate Banking Democrats to question Mr. Hurley directly and ensure that he is prepared to lead TFI in a way that strengthens our national security and financial integrity.
