HONOLULU - The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies Oʻahu motorists that the newly installed traffic signal system on Kailua Road at the intersections of Uluʻoa Street and Ulumanu Drive will begin flashing on Friday, May 15.
The flashing signal is a temporary action to alert motorists of the new system that will serve as a traffic control measure. The traffic signal will be activated on Monday, May 18, at which time drivers must obey the green-yellow-red indicators in accordance with Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 291C-31.
The Kailua Road Traffic Signal installation Project began in October 2024 to improve safety and accessibility for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians at the Kailua Road intersections with Uluʻoa Street and Ulumanu Drive. Improvements made through the project were installation of traffic signals, sidewalk curb extensions and sidewalk curb ramps.
The raised crosswalks at Uluʻoa Street and midblock east of Ulumanu Drive will be removed after the signals are activated. The crosswalk at Uluʻoa Street will be restriped and the midblock crosswalk east of Ulumanu Drive will be relocated to the protected crossing at Ulumanu Drive. Fencing will also be installed in the grassy median between Ulumanu Drive and the site of the former midblock crosswalk.
Motorists are advised to follow all traffic control signs through the area and to proceed with caution as drivers become used to the new signals. HDOT thanks the public for its patience and cooperation as we work to provide safer facilities.
