LINCOLN, NEBRASKA - Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood announced the nomination of First Congressional District constituents to the U.S. Military Service Academies. The announcement comes at the conclusion of a rigorous interview and selection process that included the input of a committee of Nebraskans with diverse backgrounds, including military leaders and community members.
"I want to commend this impressive class of Nebraskans who desire to serve our nation through our Armed Forces. It is one of the greatest honors to put forward talented young leaders for consideration at our U.S. Military Service Academies every year," said Congressman Flood. "I would also like to express my appreciation to the selection committee for their careful and dedicated review of every applicant."
The committee was chaired by Dave Merritt of Norfolk (USN) with members including Col. Fred Phelan of Lincoln (USAF) and Chris Hove of Lincoln (USN). The committee examined each applicant's understanding of the nature of the Military Service Academies, the role of Officers in the Armed Forces, the applicant's desire to serve, their academic records, and their ability to communicate effectively in a high stakes environment.
With input of the committee, Congressman Mike Flood nominated applicants that met the rigorous academic and physical requirements of the Military Service Academies. There are five U.S. Military Service Academies: U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The office received no applications for nomination to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
