Harold Washington College Vice President of Student Affairs Luvia Moreno has been appointed to the Illinois Board of Education Board of Directors by Governor JB Pritzker. Moreno is a higher education leader with close to 20 years of experience in urban institutions, advancing equity and access for underrepresented students through student support, college readiness, and holistic development.
"Throughout my career in higher education, from my current role at Harold Washington College to my time Northeastern Illinois University and beyond, my focus has always been on advancing equity, access, and holistic development for our students. Joining the ISBE is an incredible opportunity to scale that impact and serve learners across the entire state," said Moreno.
Prior to joining City Colleges of Chicago, Moreno served in multiple leadership roles at Northeastern Illinois University, including assistant dean of students, interim director for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs, and as director of student advocacy, with a focus on addressing student home and food insecurity. Earlier in her career, she was assistant director of Proyecto Pa'Lante, supporting first-generation Latine students, and retention and transition coordinator for a Title V cooperative grant between Morton College and Governors State University.
Moreno is an ENLACE Fellow alumna and holds a master's degree in educational leadership and a bachelor's degree in sociology from Northeastern Illinois University. She currently serves on the board of the Illinois Latino Council on Higher Education (ILACHE).
