The Idea in Exile: Reflections on Philosophical Fiction & the Worldliness of Thought

World Languages & Cultures, Department of Friday October 31, 2025

The Department of World Languages & Cultures invites the campus community to learn about the research of Dr. Aaron Castroverde, associate professor of Spanish during his talk titled "The Idea in Exile: Reflections on Philosophical Fiction & the Worldliness of Thought."

From Dr. Castroverde's abstract: "My paper examines philosophical fiction as a transnational form that challenges the universality of philosophical concepts by situating them within specific historical, political and aesthetic contexts. I argue that this genre, rooted in and yet critical of European traditions, exposes the colonial underpinnings of literary universalism and reveals how global literature negotiates the tension between universality and cultural plurality."

Join us in the Language Lab (A&S 271) at 12 p.m. Monday for the presentation of his work followed by time for Q & A.
