Sen. Ossoff Backing Bipartisan Bill to Prohibit Political Discrimination in Provision of Federal Disaster Assistance

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is working to ban political discrimination in the provision of Federal disaster assistance.

Today, Sen. Ossoff launched a push to pass the bipartisan Stopping Political Discrimination in Disaster Assistance Act to prohibit in Federal law any political discrimination when Federal agencies provide disaster assistance after a natural disaster.

The bipartisan bill was first introduced by Sen. James Lankford (R-OK).

"No American impacted by a natural disaster should ever, ever be denied assistance based on their political beliefs," Sen. Ossoff said. "That's why I helped introduce this bipartisan bill to prohibit in law political discrimination in the provision of Federal disaster assistance."

Last year, an employee of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was fired for directing Federal workers to avoid assisting Hurricane Helene survivors who supported the Trump campaign.

Sen. Ossoff continues working to support victims of Hurricane Helene.

Last December, Sens. Ossoff and Rev. Warnock successfully fought to pass a bipartisan disaster relief package that included $21 billion in agricultural disaster funding to help Georgia farmers recovering from the disastrous impacts of Hurricane Helene and farmers nationwide impacted by natural disasters.

In November, Sen. Ossoff testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations on the urgent need to support Georgia agriculture after the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene.

In October, Sen. Ossoff and Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08), alongside Georgia's entire Congressional Delegation, led a bipartisan, bicameral group of 34 lawmakers from Southeastern states urging Congressional Leadership to work with them and the Biden Administration to ensure disaster relief resources are made available to agricultural producers following the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene for agriculture.
