Monmouth County prepares for snowstorm and urges residents to travel safely
FREEHOLD, NJ - The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners advises residents to be cautious in light of the snow forecast across the County beginning Saturday, Jan. 24 and potentially lasting until Monday, Jan. 26. The Department of Public Works will be pretreating County infrastructure and continue to monitor the impending storm.
"We strongly encourage those who do not need to travel to stay off the roads during the storm, and for those who must, to drive with caution," said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the Monmouth County Department of Public Works and Engineering. "The County is prepared to deploy 211 trucks and 51 pieces of equipment to battle the snowstorm. Please be mindful of snow and ice control trucks and give them enough room to do their work."
According to the National Weather Service, snow totals are expected to range from 12 to 18 inches. Snowfall is predicted to start late Saturday night and continue through early afternoon on Monday. Hazardous conditions are expected, especially on Sunday, and travelers are urged to proceed with caution.
"In advance of the storm, the County has already distributed approximately 2,500 tons of salt to more than 20 municipalities through existing shared services agreements and has begun applying 50,000 gallons of salt brine to County roadways, along with an additional 30,000 gallons through shared services partners," said Commissioner Director Arnone. "We estimate that, if the storm is as large and long as predicted, it will require approximately 7,500 to 10,000 tons of salt to treat roughly 1,000 lane miles of County roads and all County facilities."
"My fellow Commissioners and I thank our first responders and everyone in the Department of Public Works for their efforts in preparing for the storm and dedication to keeping our communities safe," added Commissioner Director Arnone.
