Long-time local doctors to serve as Leahy Clinic medical directors

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Edward R. Leahy Jr. Clinic for the Uninsured has announced that Tom Minora, MD, and Rajan Mulloth, MD, have agreed to serve as co medical directors.

The free clinic, operated through a Geisinger School of Medicine-University of Scranton partnership, offers primary care to uninsured residents of Lackawanna County.

"We are delighted that these two well respected physicians have agreed to serve the clinic's patients and our students and we thank previous director Dr. Susan Russell for her leadership," said Julie Byerley, MD, MPH, president of Geisinger College of Health Sciences and dean of its School of Medicine. "The Leahy Clinic is the perfect learning environment for our students to gain essential clinical skills, but also to take on leadership and advocacy roles. For some students, it will be the most meaningful experience of their medical education."

Rev. Joseph G. Marina, S.J., president of The University of Scranton, added, "The Leahy Clinic represents the very best of our mission. As Drs. Minora and Mulloth step into these leadership roles, they bring a shared spirit of service that will strengthen the clinic's vision and inspire the healthcare professionals of today and tomorrow who see medicine as both a profession and a calling."

For Dr. Mulloth, the appointment holds special meaning. He was among the clinic's earliest volunteer physicians when it opened in 2007, joining a small group of providers committed to caring for patients who had limited access to healthcare. Over the years, he spent Thursday afternoons at the clinic, working alongside students and fellow volunteers to provide care in an environment focused solely on patients' needs.

"What brought me to the clinic was the opportunity to help patients and really get to know them," Dr. Mulloth said. "You could spend time with people, understand their problems and their family situations and do the best you could for them. It was medicine the way you always wanted to practice it."

An internal medicine physician, Dr. Mulloth brings decades of clinical experience to the role. Since 1996, he has practiced community-based internal medicine in northeastern Pennsylvania, building long-term relationships with patients and families across generations. He serves on the Scranton Half Marathon Board of Directors, the Scranton Area Foundation Board of Governors and various committees.

Dr. Thomas Minora is an internist who practiced medicine in the Scranton area for over 40 years. He has also been an instructor at Commonwealth Medical College and The Scranton Temple Residency Program. He has served on the boards of PrimeMed P.C., Northeastern Pennsylvania Physicians Organization and Moses Taylor Physician Hospital Organization. He also served as treasurer and vice president of the Lackawanna Medical Society.

"I missed interacting with students as their passion, enthusiasm and energy was infectious," he said. "I feel fortunate to have this opportunity and I look forward to working with the students again."
