EU membership is not a security guarantee; it is a merit-based process

EU membership is not a security guarantee; it is a merit-based process, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán posted on X in response to a statement by Finnish head of state Alexander Stubb in connection with Ukraine's European Union integration.

"According to President Alexander Stubb, the strongest security guarantee is Ukraine's membership in the EU. Mr President, I beg to differ" Mr Orbán wrote, adding that "EU membership is not a security guarantee; it is a merit-based process. If it truly were "the strongest security guarantee," then Finland would have had no reason to join NATO. Fast-tracking Ukraine into the EU would not strengthen our Union - it would drag the threat of war directly inside it. We suggest a more reasonable approach," the Hungarian Prime Minister wrote.
