The Humanities Research Colloquium will host a book talk featuring Dr. Dawne Moon, professor of social and cultural sciences, and Dr. Theresa W. Tobin, associate professor of philosophy, both of the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, on Thursday, March 26, from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Marquette Hall 105 and via Teams.
The talk, titled "Choosing Love: What LGBTQ+ Christians Can Teach Us All about Relationships, Inclusion, and Justice," is based on their 2025 book published by Oxford University Press.
In "Choosing Love," Moon and Tobin explore the experiences of LGBTQ+ conservative Christians who navigate identities often seen as incompatible. Drawing on participant observation within organizations for LGBTQ+ Christians and more than 100 interviews with LGBTQ+ Christians, former Christians and allies, the authors examine how individuals and communities are working to build more inclusive, loving and just families, churches and communities.
The book also engages ideas from thinkers such as Martin Buber, Martin Luther King Jr., Black and Third World feminist scholars, and queer thinkers of color to highlight the role of relationships and love in the pursuit of justice.
In addition to her professorial role, Moon is the director of the Gender and Sexualities Studies Program. A qualitative sociologist, she has researched religion, gender and sexuality for more than 30 years.
Tobin serves as director of the university's prison education initiative, the Education Preparedness Program. Her research focuses on ethics, gender, sexuality and emotion.
