BICENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION OF LAFAYETTE'S TOUR OF ALABAMA

TO BE HELD AT ALABAMA CAPITOL
THURSDAY, APRIL 3, AT 10:30AM

Montgomery, AL (04/01/2025) - A ceremony and wreath laying will be held at 10:30a.m. Thursday, April 3, in the Old House Chamber of the Alabama Capitol to commemorate the Marquis de Lafayette's 1825 tour of Alabama. On April 3, 1825, Lafayette visited Montgomery and was greeted by Governor Israel Pickens at Goat Hill, the site where the State Capitol would be constructed 25 years later. Governor Kay Ivey, Associate Supreme Court Justice Will Sellers, Alabama Society DAR State Regent Malinda Lydia Williams, and State Senator Arthur Orr will offer remarks at the ceremony. The program will also include a special appearance by the Marquis de Lafayette.

Event partners include the Alabama Department of Archives & History, the Alabama Historical Commission, the Alabama House of Representatives, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Children of the American Revolution. The ceremony is made possible with support from the Alabama Association of RD&C Councils, the American Friends of Lafayette, the Alabama Bicentennial Commission Foundation, and the Alabama Humanities Alliance.

The Alabama Department of Archives and History is the state's government-records repository, a special-collections library and research facility, and home to the Museum of Alabama, the state history museum.
