Meet Katherine, Applications and Market Development Manager at CAMECA

CAMECA is a world-leading supplier of elemental and isotopic microanalytical instrumentation. This AMETEK business was established in 1929 and originally manufactured movie theater projectors, before evolving into a manufacturer of scientific instruments.

Katherine is a chemical engineer by training who now works as the Applications and Market Development Manager for CAMECA. We caught up with her while she was attending AMETEK University - a three-day training and development program for leaders and future leaders of AMETEK. Learn more about her AMETEK journey!

How did your AMETEK career begin?

I began working at CAMECA in Madison, WI in 2014 after completing my PhD in Chemical Engineering. I started out in the lab as an Applications Scientist, then later became the Applications Lab Manager. Most recently, I transitioned into a business development role while still retaining my responsibilities as Applications Manager.

What is the most interesting part about working at CAMECA?

The most interesting part of my job is the endless variety. We receive all kinds of customer samples in our demo lab - every day brings something new. One area that's been especially exciting is microelectronics. We've seen a significant increase in semiconductor device analysis. These tiny chips, like the ones in your phone or computer, are incredibly sensitive, and even a few atoms out of place can affect performance. It's fascinating work.

CAMECA won AMETEK's 2024 Innovation Award. Can you tell us more about your involvement with the award-winning team?

Winning the 2024 Innovation Award was an amazing experience. It recognized our work on the LEAP 6000 product line, which is CAMECA's latest generation of atom probe technology. My team acted as the end users: handling customer demos, sample analysis for new applications, engineering qualification, and more.

One of our key contributions was identifying materials that the LEAP 6000 analyzes more effectively than previous models, including semiconductors, capacitor materials, and geological samples. The improvements have made our work more efficient and significantly enhanced customer training and satisfaction.

How has AMETEK supported you in your position?

AMETEK has been incredibly supportive throughout my career at CAMECA. I was able to pursue my MBA while working. That experience gave me valuable insight into the business side of things, complementing my scientific background. I've also been fortunate to have access to excellent mentors throughout my career here, which has made a big difference. I even had the opportunity to attend AMETEK University this year and connect with team members across AMETEK's different businesses.

What was your experience like at AMETEK University?

It was fantastic! AMETEK University gave me the opportunity to connect with colleagues outside my business unit and gain a broader understanding of how well this company is managed. I was impressed by the emphasis on financial accuracy, ethical standards, and the approachability of the executive team. Many of them have grown within the company, just like the rest of us, which is really inspiring.
