SGMC Health Honors Switchboard Team as Health System Heroes

SGMC Health recognized Switchboard operators as its Health System Heroes at the monthly Board of Directors meeting. Latacha Barron, Feiona Gross, Kimberly Jackson, Erika Lee, and Priscilla Shipman were honored for their pivotal role in the health system's daily operations, ensuring seamless communication and connectivity when seconds matter.

Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the SGMC Health switchboard manages an astounding volume of over a quarter of a million calls annually. With an average of 22,000 calls per month, the team directs incoming inquiries to the appropriate personnel or departments, providing critical communication support to patients, families, and healthcare professionals alike.

The switchboard's responsibilities extend beyond call management. They play a crucial role in activating and processing emergency codes, a function that is vital to maintaining patient safety and operational efficiency. Additionally, the team monitors essential systems such as generators and medical gases, further underscoring their integral role in the hospital's infrastructure.

Their work ensures that physicians can communicate effectively, enabling better patient outcomes. Whether it's providing patient information, guiding visitors with directions, or managing on-call schedules, the switchboard associates are a constant, reliable resource for the entire SGMC Health community.

Board members echoed this sentiment. Internal Medicine Physician Brian Griner, MD, Emergency Medicine Physician Elizabeth Flail, DO, and retired nurse Shirley Garland, shared their personal gratitude to the switchboard team, reiterating their role in ensuring patients receive safe and timely care.
