Credit for Prior Learning Extended to Emergency Management, Education

Millersville University has extended its Credit for Prior Learning program to include emergency management and education majors. Through CPL, certain industry-recognized trainings or credentials count as equivalent for specified credit-bearing courses. CPL consideration is now available for business, education (early childhood, middle level and secondary, and reading specialist), emergency management (bachelor's and master's) and nursing majors.

Through a recent agreement with the Pennsylvania State Police, students may complete a bachelor's degree in emergency management and the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in four years.

"The concept was designed for traditional-age students to begin at Millersville - taking 90 credits over 3 years - and then earn their final 30 credits by completing the Police Academy," says Barbara Havercamp, director of the Office of Graduate Studies and Adult Learning at Millersville. "They would then complete everything in four years, earning a bachelor's degree and a Pennsylvania State Police designation. Individuals must be at least 21 years old to be accepted into the Pennsylvania State Police Academy."

Current Pennsylvania State Police troopers may also apply to be awarded CPL equivalency toward a bachelor's degree in emergency management.

Millersville will award nine credits toward a master's degree in emergency management to troopers who already have a bachelor's degree and enroll in the master's program. This assumes as troopers they successfully completed the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and are in good standing with the Pennsylvania State Police.

Education majors in early childhood, middle level and secondary education may now be considered for CPL at Millersville. To be eligible for up to nine credits, they must successfully complete a Pennsylvania Career and Technical Education program in Early Learning or Elementary and Secondary Education and pass the associated NOCTI assessment.

"This evaluation measures the knowledge and skills acquired through Career and Technical Education coursework and serves as a recognized indicator of occupational competency," says Havercamp. "Requirements may be completed while enrolled in high school or, in some cases, after graduation."
