Earlier this month, the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) hosted its first-ever Technology & Innovation Summit in Washington, D.C., bringing together leaders from across the outdoor recreation and technology sectors with federal agencies and members of Congress. The summit highlighted how technology is transforming the $1.2 trillion outdoor recreation economy-expanding access, strengthening stewardship, and supporting millions of American jobs.
Showcasing Innovation and Access
Throughout the afternoon, participants and speakers - including Siren Marine, a connected division of NMMA member Yamaha Motor Corp. USA - explored how technology is reshaping outdoor experiences, from data-driven stewardship tools and wildfire monitoring systems to new platforms that simplify campground reservations and enhance boating, camping, and trail access. Live demonstrations showcased innovations that connect people with nature, improve safety, and help land managers and businesses support responsible recreation.
Public-Private Partnerships at the Core
Frank Hugelmeyer, NMMA president and CEO, emphasized that strong partnerships are essential to realizing the full potential of innovation:
"Technology is not a replacement for stewardship, but a tool that strengthens it. Innovation works best when industry, agencies, and policymakers build solutions together. The $1.2 trillion outdoor recreation economy is one of America's greatest assets, and by working together, we can ensure technology helps us grow this economy while protecting the lands and waters that make it possible." The program closed with remarks from U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, a committed partner to the outdoor recreation industry. His leadership and dedication to collaboration have helped elevate recreation access and stewardship as national priorities, reinforcing the shared goal of ensuring all Americans can connect with the outdoors.
Looking Ahead
From accessible mapping that empowers outdoor users to technology platforms that reduce silos across agencies, the summit underscored a clear takeaway: the future of outdoor recreation depends on innovation. With the door wide open for continued partnership, the outdoor recreation community is thankful for Secretary Burgum's partnership and committed to ensuring that technology strengthens stewardship, expands public access, and supports American jobs and manufacturing.
