MBTA Announces Service Updates and mTicket Availability for World Cup 2026 Matches

Commuter Rail offers one of the most affordable and convenient ways to travel to and from Boston Stadium with expanded service.

The MBTA today announced service information during this summer's seven World Cup matches in June and July, including expanded Commuter Rail service and special Boston Stadium Train tickets to help fans travel across the region.

Roundtrip Boston Stadium Train tickets between South Station and Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium) will be $80, sold exclusively on mTicket, and are good for travel on the entire Commuter Rail network on match days, allowing visitors more flexibility and options in choosing where to stay to attend World Cup matches. Tickets for the first five matches will go on sale beginning at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 8, with tickets for the Round 32 and Quarter-Final matches on sale closer to the match dates. Full information can be found at MBTA.com/WorldCup.

Compared to driving, parking, and event-day traffic delays, Commuter Rail provides a predictable and more affordable way to travel to and from matches.

The MBTA has been planning for over a year to support the 2026 World Cup matches held at Boston Stadium and to welcome soccer fans from around the globe to Massachusetts this summer. The agency has coordinated closely with Boston26, the Healey-Driscoll Administration, local municipalities, and Gillette Stadium/The Kraft Group to prepare for increased ridership and ensure a safe, reliable travel experience.

"The MBTA is proud to have the opportunity to enable football fans from near and far to travel the Commonwealth, and we are ready to deliver unprecedented transit services to the seven World Cup matches held at Boston Stadium. The MBTA and MassDOT are focused on ensuring that we balance and support all of the celebrations and events this summer with the needs of our daily riders and drivers that count on the transportation system 365 days a year," said Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. "MassDOT anticipates high volumes of traffic to Boston Stadium for the upcoming matches, and traffic management will include additional roadside message signs, proactive deployment of tow trucks to quickly clear vehicles, and High Occupancy Vehicle Lane schedule adjustments between Boston and Braintree on I-93. With our service plans and pricing announced today, we encourage the public to Kick the Drive and use the MBTA's Boston Stadium Train service instead. Taking the Commuter Rail will be one of the easiest and most affordable ways to get to and from the Stadium. I thank the Healey-Driscoll Administration and our Legislative partners for their leadership and support, our dedicated workforces for their planning and service efforts, and to our new and regular riders - thank you for choosing transit and the MBTA."

As Massachusetts prepares for increased travel demand this summer, the MBTA is focused on making it easier and more affordable for residents and visitors to get where they need to go while reducing congestion on roads.

Travelers should expect significant traffic delays on match days and are encouraged to plan ahead, adjust travel times, and take public transportation whenever possible. Choosing transit can help reduce congestion, improve safety, and ensure a smoother experience for everyone traveling this summer.

This service plan builds on the Healey-Driscoll Administration's previously announced summer fare discounts, which are helping make Commuter Rail more affordable and offset impacts to regular riders during a busy travel season. By pairing expanded service with lower fares, the administration is making it easier for residents to save money, avoid traffic, and get where they need to go.

World Cup MBTA Service Information

Complete Boston Stadium Train schedules to the seven World Cup matches are available now on the Boston Stadium Trains schedule page at MBTA.com/BostonStadiumTrains. Boston Stadium Trains are the only MBTA public transit mode to Boston Stadium on match days. There is no MBTA subway or bus service to Boston Stadium. Boston26 is expected to announce additional bus service options in the coming days.

The MBTA will operate 14 express trains on the Franklin/Foxboro Commuter Rail Line between South Station and Boston Stadium in Foxborough on match days, helping fans avoid driving due to limited parking near the stadium. Additional station staff will be onsite to direct passengers with boarding, direct pedestrian flow, and answer questions.

Most regular peak-period Commuter Rail service will be preserved to minimize impacts to daily ridership, though Commuter Rail lines will experience temporary schedule adjustments from June 8 to July 12. For the seven World Cup dates, the southside of the Commuter Rail network will have match day specific schedules to support this unprecedented effort. More information on these schedule changes is available at MBTA.com/WorldCupChanges. Full Spring and Summer Commuter Rail schedules will be available within the coming weeks at MBTA.com/CR.

The Red, Orange, Green, and Blue subway lines and select bus routes (SL1, SL3, SL5, 1, 22, 39, 66, and 110) will have extended service to 2 AM on weekday match days and 4 AM on Sunday, June 14, for the match held on Saturday, June 13. This will allow Commuter Rail passengers returning from matches to make subway and bus connections. The SL4 will also operate until 4 AM on June 14 (for the June 13 match). Bus Routes 23, 28, 57, 111, and 116 also run extended service seven days a week.

Affordability Measures

Last week, Governor Maura Healey and Interim Secretary and General Manager Eng announced a series of summer fare promotions and discounts on the MBTA Commuter Rail to lower costs for riders, support regular commuters, and encourage more people to choose public transportation as Massachusetts prepares for a busy season of major events across the state. This includes four promotions that will run on the Commuter Rail through June, July, and August, including Free Fridays, a 50% discount on monthly passes, and more. Monthly passholders will save between $321 and $639 over the summer, depending on their route.
