Security and Defence

The EU is contributing to enhanced regional security in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the maritime domain.

The EU is contributing to enhanced regional security in the Indo-Pacific by strengthening security and defence partnerships, holding regular dialogues and consultations with partners, and engaging in more operational cooperation, such as joint naval exercises.

Security cooperation

  • The EU naval operation, EUNAVFOR - Operation Atalanta has conducted successful joint naval exercises with Indo-Pacific partners (India, Indonesia, Japan, Rep. Korea, United States).
  • The EU Coordinated Maritime Presence (CMP) in the North-West Indian Ocean is designed to optimise the use EU Member States' assets deployed to the region.
  • The EU continues to step up activities with Indo-Pacific partners under the EU-funded project "Enhancing Security Cooperation in and with Asia" (ESIWA), which covers four thematic areas: counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, maritime security and crisis management.

In the area of maritime domain awareness, EU actions will continue to be framed by the CRIMARIO project and its IORIS (Indo-Pacific Regional Information Sharing) platform. This secured system can support maritime information sharing at the regional level.
