I-80 work in La Salle County begins Sept. 13

LA SALLE - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that weather permitting, construction on Interstate 80 between the Illinois 351 interchange in La Salle and the Illinois 178 interchange in Utica will begin on Sunday, Sept. 13. The project will include the ramps at the Interstate 39 and 80 interchange.

Work on I-80 will be done overnight starting at 7 p.m. and ending by 6 a.m. the following morning. One lane will be closed in each direction during the project, which is scheduled to wrap up in November.

Starting Monday, Sept. 14, patching will begin on all the ramps at the I-80 and I-39 interchange. The following ramp closures are needed to complete the work: Closures will begin at 5 a.m. and each ramp will take up to five days to complete, weather permitting.

Monday, Sept. 14:

  • I-39 southbound to I-80 eastbound
  • I-39 southbound to I-80 westbound

Tuesday, Sept. 15:

  • I-80 westbound to I-39 southbound

Wednesday, Sept. 16:

  • I-80 eastbound to I-39 southbound

Thursday, Sept. 17:

  • I-39 northbound to I-80 westbound.

Monday, Sept. 21

  • I-80 eastbound to I-39 northbound
  • I-39 northbound to I-80 eastbound

Tuesday, Sept. 22

  • I-80 westbound to I-39 northbound

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area and be prepared for slow and stopped traffic. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
