Charges likely after deceased cats found during warrant of eviction

INCIDENT SUMMARY: According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, on Wednesday October 1st, 2025 the Washington County Sheriff's Office patrolled to 17 Montcalm Avenue, Apartment #1, in the Village of Whitehall to serve a Warrant of Eviction. Upon arrival the responding Deputy observed a deceased kitten on the porch of the apartment of the eviction. The Deputy was unable to make contact with the occupant, and the owner was allowed access to the residence. Upon making entry into the apartment, the conditions were discovered to be unlivable with a number of cats left behind. The Sheriff's Office secured a Search Warrant that was executed at the apartment on the afternoon of October 1st.

The Village of Whitehall Animal Control Officer and Washington County Code Enforcement were called to the scene. During the search of the apartment eight (8) deceased cats were located within the residence along with four (4) living cats.

At this time this is an active investigation with the Sheriff's Office and Animal Control, charges are likely in this investigation.
