Virginia Department of Education announced today that Madeline Duffy, a Nottoway High School special education teacher, has been named the 2027 Region 8 Teacher of the Year - recognizing her dedication to supporting students with disabilities and helping all students succeed.
"Madeline Duffy exemplifies the very best of Nottoway County Public Schools," said Nottoway County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Marcia H. Martin. "Her dedication, commitment, and passion for teaching have made a lasting impact on our students, families, and the entire community. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure student success, and her recognition as Region 8 Teacher of the Year is a true reflection of her excellence and the pride we have in her work. We are incredibly fortunate to have her as part of our Nottoway team and her commitment to excellence."
Duffy leads the Cougar Café, a student-run coffee shop that provides hands-on learning opportunities for students with disabilities.
Reginald Wilson, the Nottoway High School Principal, reflected on what Duffy's leadership has brought to Cougar Café:
"Nowhere is Madeline's impact more visible than in the Cougar Café," said Mr. Wilson. "Because of her, our students aren't just learning life skills; they are running a business, gaining confidence, and bringing joy to our division staff. The Cafe has become a highlight of Nottoway High School."
Madeline's contributions extend beyond the classroom. Whether she is on the diamond coaching softball teams or volunteering at countless after-school activities, she consistently shows her dedication.
"Madeline Duffy's commitment to student success, leading innovative programs like Cougar Café, or being involved in programming after school creates life-changing experiences for students," said Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jenna Conway. "Ms. Duffy's work ensures that every student is seen, supported, and given opportunities to succeed beyond graduation with positive school experiences to cherish."
Duffy will represent Region 8, Southside Virginia, in the statewide Virginia Teacher of the Year selection process.
