The public is invited to join Santa Rosa County for a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2:30 p.m. on Thur., Jan. 16 to celebrate the opening of the new pickleball courts at Lenny James Tolbert Memorial Park (formerly Holley Ball Park), 3124 Bob Tolbert Rd. in Navarre.
Located near the baseball field, the park now features two pickleball courts for the public to enjoy, each measuring 44 feet by 20 feet. The total cost of developing the pickleball courts was approximately $51,000 from general fund revenue.
"We're excited about this new addition to Lenny James Tolbert Memorial Park," said Commissioner Ray Eddington, District 4. "It's the first pickleball court in District 4 and I'm thankful for our team who worked hard to make this happen for everyone."
Pickleball is a paddleball sport that combines elements of badminton, table tennis, and tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, much like a wiffle ball with 26-40 round holes, over a net. The sport shares features of other racket sports: the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis with several modifications.
In addition to the new pickleball court, the Lenny James Tolbert Memorial Park offers a variety of recreational amenities, including a baseball field, batting cages, a pavilion, picnic tables and a playground.
