FIATA visits the Federation of Malaysian Freight Forwarders (FMFF)

On 8 January, the FIATA Legal Services Director had the opportunity to visit the Federation of Malaysian Freight Forwarders (FMFF) at their offices in Klang, Malaysia. The visit was timely in the context of FIATA's ongoing work towards strengthening regional corridor development and trade facilitation, noting Malaysia's strategic positioning as a major regional logistics hub and ASEAN gateway, and the rapid developments taking place in the region which are driving important policy and legislative reform.

The discussion focused on the importance of greater harmonisation and regulatory convergence to strengthen regional transport corridors, noting the ongoing challenges of fragmentation. The role of the FIATA Multimodal Transport Bill of Lading (FBL) and eFBL as a key solution to address some of these challenges was a key focal point, noting the recent successful pilots that had taken place with real-life transactions from Central Asia to Europe and Central Asia to China! With regional corridor development being a key focus, together with positive legal developments such as the development of a international legal framework on negotiable multimodal transport documents being finalised at the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the adoption of the UN Model Law on Electronic Transferrable Records (MLETR) under consideration in Malaysia, it was noted that the time is ripe for the FBL/eFBL to be adopted in the region. The importance of FIATA's support and engagement in leveraging regional free trade agreements was underlined, and FIATA will continue to work closely at both the institutional and membership levels to provide support and practical solutions for the industry. These topics will be discussed further at the forthcoming FIATA HQ Meeting in Geneva.

Other topics discussed included AEO Programmes, the ICAO-FIATA Dangerous Goods by Air Training Programme, container deposits, and the ongoing need for a harmonised airfreight framework.

FIATA thanks FMFF for their warm welcome and longstanding commitment, and looks forward to continuing to work together in the interests of enhancing trade faciltiation.
