Dr. Timothy J. Marks, assistant professor of Pharmaceutical & Clinical Sciences, received the 2025 CPHS Dean's Award for Excellence. Dr. Jeff Mercer, CPHS Dean, presented Dr. Marks this prestigious award. Marks' career reflects academic leadership, research innovation, curriculum development, and student mentorship. His impact on both students and faculty made him a well-qualified candidate for this award.
Marks holds a PhD in Microbiology and a Professional Science Master's in Microbial Biotechnology from North Carolina State University, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Butler University. He joined Campbell University's College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences in 2010 as an instructor and program administrator in Pharmaceutical Sciences. He was promoted to assistant research professor in 2016 and to assistant professor in Pharmaceutical & Clinical Sciences in 2020. His teaching now spans across multiple programs, including pharmaceutical sciences, clinical research, pharmacy, and engineering.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Marks serves as a faculty advisor and co-chair of the PCS Curriculum Committee. He actively mentors students, guiding research that leads to conference presentations and publications. His service on faculty committees, including the University Faculty Senate and Curriculum Committees, supports academic governance and student success.
Marks has extensive research experience and acts as grant director for the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Student STEM Enrichment Program. As Grant Director, Marks collaborates with the Science Education Outreach (SEO) program. He has developed virtual reality learning modules and a digital twin bioprocessing facility to enhance experiential learning. His research focuses on bacteriophages, microbial biotechnology, and innovative educational methodologies.
"One of my main career goals since I started at Campbell in 2010 has been to teach microbiology and immunology in the PharmD program, so I jumped at the opportunity when it presented itself this year. Leaps of faith of this nature usually come with challenges, and this was no exception. This award was an incredible honor that served as affirmation for me that I'm where I'm supposed to be. I tell people all the time how fortunate I am to work at Campbell and how much I love it here. From the administration to my colleagues in the PCS and pharmacy practice departments to the students- it's a very special place," Marks shared.
In his nomination letter, Mercer included, "Dr. Marks' dedication to education, research, and mentorship is shaping the future of students and reinforcing his role as a leader in his field."
