Fire Island National Seashore to Resume Deer Management Operations After Pause During January Winter Storm

PATCHOGUE, NY - Deer removal operations will resume at Fire Island National Seashore after a pause in January due to winter storm impacts and frigid temperatures. The Seashore's White-tailed Deer Management Plan will resume between February 23 and 27 on National Park Service (NPS) lands on Fire Island. In January, NPS completed deer removal operations at the William Floyd Estate.

NPS is charged with maintaining a balanced ecosystem for the benefit of the environment and for current and future visitors to enjoy. White-tailed deer damage plants and eat most native plant species. Having an overabundance of deer in these areas shrinks the size of our forested areas and prevents forest regeneration. Damage from deer also decreases habitat available for native birds and other wildlife.

Highly qualified wildlife professionals will carry out the removal operations on Fire Island. Deer reduction activities will take place on federal lands only. When operations take place, areas of the park will close for the public's safety.
