Medical gaslighting is an actual term. It occurs when a patient's concern is overlooked by their health care provider "because of their age, healthy appearance, or other biases," according to Everyday Health. Najeeb Al Hallak, M.D., MS, medical oncologist and co-leader of the Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos, gave tips on how to prepare for an appointment where a patient may need to discuss recent symptoms with their physician, how to guide the conversation if the doctor says, "you're too young for a colonoscopy," and when to seek a second opinion.
