Durbin Statement On The Weaponization Of The Justice Department Against Minnesota Politicians

SPRINGFIELD - U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement after the Justice Department reportedly opened investigations into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison over an alleged conspiracy to impede immigration agents:

"During his campaign and his presidency, President Trump promised 'retribution' against his enemies. He has made good on his promise, using the justice system as a shield for his cronies and a sword to attack his opponents.

"Instead of deporting 'the worst of the worst,' Donld Trump is targeting communities that didn't vote for him, like Chicago and Minneapolis, rounding up tens of thousands of immigrants, or people who look like immigrants, with no criminal history, and attacking peaceful protestors exercising their First Amendment rights.

"Last time I checked, Governor Walz, Mayor Frey, and AG Ellison had the right to free speech as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution-a document President Trump and AG Bondi swore to protect and defend."
