WU Yibing from Zhejiang University wins the gold!

On November 20th 2025, the men's singles final of tennis at the 15th National Games concluded at the Hengqin International Tennis Centre in Zhuhai. WU Yibing, a master student in Sports and Humanities and Sociology at the College of Education of ZJU, and a member of the campushigh-performance tennis team, defeated Beijing player SHANG Juncheng with the score of 2:1, earning Zhejiang's first-ever gold medal in men's singles tennis.

In the first set, he started perfectly with a flawless 6-0. Faced with an intense counterattack in the second set, he quickly adjusted his strategy. Under pressure in the decisive set, WU secured a crucial break at a key moment and sealed the victory 6-4 to claim the gold.

The match scores-6:0, 1:6, 6:4-like a mirror reflecting WU's professional journey: moments of brilliance, periods of difficulty, and ultimately, triumph after overcoming one challenge after another.

"Thank you all for coming to Zhuhai today, to witness the first National Games gold medal in Zhejiang's tennis history," WU said, his voice trembling with emotion, "This is the first time Zhejiang's tennis team has ever swept the gold, silver, and bronze medals. I'm incredibly moved!" In 2017, as a young and emerging tennis player, WU claimed the bronze medal in men's singles at the 13th National Games. At the 2021 14th National Games, during what should have been the prime of his career, he was unexpectedly stopped in the quarterfinals. At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, he led 6-1 in the deciding set but lost five match points and was ultimately defeated by Hong Kong player Coleman WONG Chak Lam. In this year's National Games semifinal, he faced Coleman again. This time, however, WU chose to confront his fears, withstanding immense pressure to complete a remarkable comeback.

From winning bronze on his National Games debut in 2017, to unexpectedly setback in 2021, to standing once more on the highest platform today, WU has spent eight years surpassing his own limits. This gold medal marks not only a historic breakthrough for Zhejiang tennis but also a witness to an athlete's journey from youth to maturity.

From the very first round of the National Games, WU had set his mind firmly on winning gold. After advancing to the finals, his goal remained unchanged, and he hoped to set a role model for the next generation of players. From winning the US Open Junior Championship to becoming the first mainland Chinese player to claim an ATP Tour title, and now securing gold at the National Games, WU has made history at every step. Even enduring injuries and setbacks, he never gave up.

"I hope more people will become interested in tennis because of our performance, and I hope more parents will bring their children to try the sport." This was his most heartfelt wish after winning the championship.

This gold medal belongs not only to WU Yibing, but to every youngster who grows through adversity. True victory lies not in never falling, but in rising again after every fall.
