City Secures $1M in Federal Funding for Olde Towne Pedestrian Safety Improvements

The City is proud to announce that its Olde Towne Pedestrian Safety Improvements project has been awarded $1,000,000 in Fiscal Year 2026 Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) funding. This critical investment was included in the FY26 Minibus Spending Bill, recently passed by Congress and signed into law by the President.

The funding will support the City's ongoing commitment to enhancing pedestrian safety and accessibility in and around Olde Towne Gaithersburg, with a focus on the streets providing access to Gaithersburg Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. The work funded will include traffic calming, safety improvements at intersections, and new and improved crosswalks. New sidewalks are planned along several residential streets in the Deer Park neighborhood. These improvements aim to create safer walkways, reduce traffic-related hazards, and promote a more walkable community for residents and visitors alike.

"We are thrilled to receive this federal support for efforts that directly impact the quality of life in Gaithersburg," said Mayor Jud Ashman. "Pedestrian safety is a top priority, and this funding will allow us to accelerate improvements that make our streets safer for everyone. We are grateful to our federal partners for recognizing the importance of this initiative, and we especially thank Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks and Congresswoman McClain Delaney, for their leadership and advocacy in making this funding possible."

"Safety is paramount to ensuring the cities and towns in Maryland can thrive and grow," said Senator Alsobrooks. "That's why I worked to secure $1 million to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility in Old Towne Gaithersburg. Having safe walkways, sidewalks, and crosswalks will not only keep our children and seniors safe, it will improve overall quality of life and help bring our community together."

"We want to ensure that our roads can safely meet the needs not only of drivers, but also of pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders,"said Senator Van Hollen. "That's why we secured a $1 million federal investment to support the City of Gaithersburg's plan to improve safety and walkability in Olde Towne - especially to make it safer for students going to and from school. These common-sense improvements will help build a safer and better connected Gaithersburg for all."

"This is a big win for Gaithersburg. Investments like this don't just improve infrastructure, they also make our streets safer, open doors to new economic possibilities, and strengthen the fabric of our neighborhoods," said Rep. McClain Delaney. "This progress is the result of local leaders and residents who spoke up and partnered with Congress to turn a need into reality."
