Madison police offer free training to prepare people for active shooter events

MADISON, Wis. - The Madison Police Department is offering a training designed to save lives in an active shooter situation.

The next session of the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) will be held the morning of April 15.

The training is free and open to any member or visitor to the Madison community. Officers will go over recent active shooter cases and highlight the strategies survivors used during those events that kept them alive.

"I've gone through active shooter trainings put on by about six different agencies. This is the first time I felt that thought was put into it. Thank you for not resorting to just playing videos," a recent attendee shared with our CRASE training team.

On average, it takes police three minutes to respond to an active shooter event. About two-thirds of these incidents are over by the time police arrive to the scene.

"This training provides people with a plan of action. We want to give people the skills needed to improve their chance of survival," said Jimmy Imoehl, the department's Emergency Management Lieutenant.

The course principles can be applied at businesses, schools, places of worship, clinics or anywhere people gather.

Registration is required and can be done online by visiting the Madison Police Department's website.
