Barber National Institute Launches Phase 2 of Strengthening Foundations Home Renovation Campaign Ahead of Erie Gives Day

Erie, PA (July 8, 2026)- At Barber National Institute, a commitment to compassion, innovation, and an unwavering belief in human potential guides every aspect of its work. That commitment is especially evident in its 55 community homes across Erie County, where adults with intellectual disabilities and autism are supported in living connected, independent lives within their neighborhoods and communities.

As residents age and their needs evolve, Barber National Institute is working to ensure their homes continue to provide the safety, accessibility, and comfort they deserve. To meet that need, Barber National Institute is advancing Phase 2 of its Strengthening Foundations: Home Renovation Campaign, a multi-phase initiative focused on improving accessibility, safety, and long-term livability across its residential homes.

"Many of of our community homes are more than 25 years old, while many residents are experiencing age-related changes that require additional accommodations and support. Renovations made through the campaign include accessible bathrooms and kitchens, widened doorways, lift systems, flooring improvements, roofing projects, and other critical modifications that allow individuals to remain in the homes and communities they know and love," said Patrick Barber, senior vice president at Barber National Institute.

With the support of generous donors, Barber National Institute successfully completed the first phase of the campaign last year, investing an initial $200,000 to renovate six homes in Erie County. While that progress has made an important difference, significant needs remain.

"Home is more than a place to live-it's where people build routines, relationships, independence, and a sense of belonging," said Barber. "As the individuals we support age, we have a responsibility to ensure their homes evolve with them. Continued donor support makes that possible."

The need is driven in part by a persistent funding gap. While state and federal funding helps support residential operations, it does not cover the major capital improvements required to maintain and modernize homes over time. As a result, projects must be completed in phases, relying heavily on philanthropic support.

Whether contributing for the first time or renewing a commitment to the mission, donors who support Phase 2 are helping continue work that is already underway and delivering meaningful results.

"Among the many causes people can support, few investments have the lasting impact of ensuring someone has a safe, stable home where they can continue to thrive," added Barber.

As Erie Gives Day approaches on August 11, Barber National Institute is encouraging community members to support the Strengthening Foundations Campaign and help ensure these homes continue to meet the needs of the people who rely on them today and in the years ahead.
