Kansas City is reminding drivers that enforcement of transit-only lanes along the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension will begin Sunday, February 1, following an initial education period.
Transit-only lanes are reserved for streetcars and RideKC buses and are designed to improve reliability, safety, and efficiency along the Main Street corridor. Drivers may briefly enter a transit-only lane only to access a driveway, business, parking space, turn lane, or authorized crossing. Driving straight through or stopping in the lane is not permitted.
To help drivers understand how the lanes work, Kansas City has released a short animated explainer video that walks through common scenarios drivers may encounter along Main Street, including where limited access is allowed.
"These lanes are an important part of keeping transit moving safely and predictably," said Jason Waldron, Transportation Director for Kansas City. "Clear markings and signage are in place, and the video helps show exactly how drivers can navigate the corridor correctly."
Beginning February 1, drivers who improperly operate or park in a designated transit-only lane may be subject to a fine of no less than $50 and possible towing, as outlined in City ordinance. Enforcement will be conducted consistently by the Kansas City Police Department.
The KC Streetcar Main Street Extension spans 3.5 miles between Union Station and UMKC, with more than 60% of the route operating in exclusive or semi-exclusive transit-only lanes. These lanes help reduce conflicts, improve travel times for transit riders, and support safer conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.
Drivers are encouraged to watch the explainer video and review information on Kansas City's Traffic Website before enforcement begins.
