North Texas fire departments, including the Fort Worth Fire Department (FWFD), are uniting to collect disaster relief supplies for people affected by flooding in Yancey County, North Carolina.

Why it's needed: Following the unprecedented rainfall brought by Hurricane Helene, the region saw extensive damage to more than 1,000 structures, leaving many residents without power, heat or access to basic necessities.

How to help: Fire departments across North Texas are organizing efforts to collect and distribute critical supplies to those most in need. Donations will be received through Saturday, Oct. 26, at all FWFD stations.

What they're saying: On a virtual meeting of local fire chiefs, Bradley Duncan, president of Yancey County Firefighters Association, described the widespread damage to infrastructure, which has complicated recovery efforts and isolated communities.

"The volunteer firefighters in Yancey County have been instrumental in identifying critical community needs and delivering aid wherever possible," Duncan said. "But with roads washed out and many areas only accessible by ATVs or boats, the challenges ahead are immense."

Relief efforts will focus on getting cold-weather supplies to residents, restoring access to isolated areas, and supporting long-term recovery efforts by addressing road repairs and power restoration.
