Council Honors Dolly Parton with 9 to 5 Day

The Council is honoring Dolly Parton and recognizing September 25, 2026 as "9 to 5 Day" in the City of Boston. The Council adopted a resolution celebrating Parton's life and legacy and recognizing all those working 9 to 5 in Boston or helping to support the city.

Dolly Parton was an internationally celebrated singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and philanthropist whose career spanned more than six decades. Born into a large family in rural East Tennessee, Parton began performing as a child and went on to become one of the most influential and beloved figures in American music and pop culture.

The resolution highlights Parton's connection to Boston through her 1980 film and iconic song "9 to 5," which were inspired by a grassroots labor movement of female office workers in Boston in the 1970s. The song gave voice to the experiences of working people and became an enduring anthem for workers seeking more dignity and fairness in the workplace.

Throughout her life, Parton also used her success to uplift others through efforts including the Dollywood Foundation and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, which has provided millions of books to children around the world and promoted the importance of childhood literacy. The resolution also recognizes her advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community and her message of acceptance and kindness without judgment.

Following Parton's passing on August 25, 2026, lawmakers in Tennessee introduced legislation to designate September 25 as "9 to 5 Day" in celebration of her life and legacy. Massachusetts State Senator Julian Cyr and State Representative Sam Montaño also introduced legislation to designate September 25 as "9 to 5 Day" in Massachusetts.
