UW-Oshkosh broadcast technology upgrade advances with State, Universities of Wisconsin support

A UW-Oshkosh Radio TV Film student hosts a live broadcast from the Titan TV control room in the Arts and Communication Center. A new fiber-optic upgrade will further enhance audio quality, production flexibility and real-time connectivity for student broadcasters.

The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's award-winning Radio TV Film (RTF) program is moving forward with plans for a major broadcast technology upgrade that will modernize Titan TV's production capabilities and further enhance student learning.

Supported through state funding allocated to the Universities of Wisconsin, the $3.7 million project will establish a fiber-optic data connection linking Titan Stadium and Kolf Sports Center directly to the Titan TV control room in the Arts and Communication Center. The upgrade will allow students to produce live broadcasts and sports programming at industry-standard quality without the need to transport large amounts of equipment between venues.

The project is currently in the early design phase. The Department of Facilities Development has issued a request for architectural and engineering firms to complete the design work, which will focus on both current and future fiber-optic infrastructure needs, as well as equipment systems on each end of the network. Pending completion of the design phase, construction is anticipated to begin in late 2026 or early 2027.

"This upgrade is truly transformational for our students and our productions, giving them access to the same technology used by professional broadcasters," said Justine Stokes, Titan TV general manager. "Having fiber-optic connectivity between Titan Stadium, Kolf Sports Center and our control room means our students can produce live events at the same professional level as major networks."

Once implemented, fiber-optic transmission will enable more dynamic camera placements, real-time communication between control rooms and field crews, and the ability to share content across multiple platforms.

"This project demonstrates our commitment to providing students with the most relevant, real-world experiences possible," said Ed Martini, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. "Our RTF students already produce broadcasts that rival professional productions. With this upgrade, they'll be learning and creating with the same technology they'll encounter in their careers."

The project comes as the Radio TV Film program celebrates its 60th anniversary, and Titan TV marks 50 years of broadcasting excellence at UW-Oshkosh.
