MIAMI GARDENS, FL - Today, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) released the following statement on her scheduled absence.
"Following left eye surgery, my priority has been ensuring a full and responsible recovery.
"Although I am currently unable to fly under my doctors' orders, my work has not stopped for a single day. While recovering in the district, I have continued carrying out my official duties, meeting with leaders, local organizations, city and county officials, and constituents. This past Thursday, I presented checks to members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. to help complete youth centers in Miami. This upcoming Friday, I will honor principals, including principals with the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence programs in their schools, as well as honor the Principal of the Year, who leads the school I once attended. I will also honor partners, principals, site directors, mentors, community partners, Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation, and the FL Courts & Judicial System, who will all be recognized in a Congressional Record.
"At the same time, I remain actively engaged in ongoing projects across the community, including building a Bahamian Cultural Arts Center in Coconut Grove, developing homes for female veterans in Miami, establishing a COVID memorial, and advancing the first-ever pediatric family health center, as well as presenting $1,850,000 to rehabilitate the auditorium at Parkway Middle School into a performing arts center for the people of Miami Gardens.
"I also presented $2 million each to the leaders of Miami-Dade and Broward County to support children in need, delivering over $4 million within the last 10 days to continue my efforts to reduce youth crime. I also met with the City of Opa-locka, the mayor of Miramar, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and the Broward County Public School system to begin coordinating these efforts across my district. Now their work will be bolstered with these investments for the children of the community.
"Whether in Washington or in the district, the work never stops for me. Serving the people of Florida's 24th Congressional District has been the work of my entire adult life. This is my footprint, and this is what I do, and my constituents know my commitment to them is unwavering.
"I look forward to returning soon and continuing to deliver for the people of Florida's 24th Congressional District with the same dedication, strength, and commitment they deserve."
