Interagency Group takes further steps to contain the oil spill along the coast of Tamaulipas

The Interagency Group (IG) , which includes the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar); the Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat); the Secretariat of Energy (Sener); the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation (Secihti); the Agency for Safety, Energy, and the Environment (ASEA); Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex); the Federal Attorney General's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa); the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca), as well as state and municipal authorities, has issued the following report:

Efforts to contain oil spills along the coast of the state of Tamaulipas remain ongoing. Today, as part of these efforts, personnel from the Ministry of the Navy surveyed approximately 17 kilometers of beach in Puerto Morelos (Mezquital) and Costa Azul (Bagdad), where approximately 236 kilograms of oil residue were collected.

The collection of solid waste is also ongoing in order to keep the beaches clean so that domestic and foreign tourists can enjoy this holiday season.

It should be noted that from March 27 to date, the work carried out by the agencies that make up the Interagency Group has led to the collection of approximately 6,379 tons of crude oil on the aforementioned beaches.

The combined efforts of the authorities involved, which have resulted in intensive cleanup, containment, and monitoring operations, have yielded these encouraging results in dealing with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which has not yet spread beyond the Mexican coastline.

The Interagency Group continues to carry out surveillance, coordination, and ongoing monitoring activities, which are aimed at ensuring accurate information on the situation and strengthening timely response efforts in the affected areas.
