The IL Democrats Want to Tax Your Campfires!

February 4, 2026

When it comes to staying warm and enjoying time outdoors with campfires, Illinois House Democrats seem determined to make it as expensive as possible. First came their massive energy rate hike last fall during veto session that will hit the pockets of every Illinois resident. Now, Representative Murri Briel and House Democrats crafted legislation that would allow municipalities to charge a fee just for lighting a campfire.

House Bill 4459 would open the door for local governments to impose a $5 charge on open burns, including campfires. For families, campers, and anyone simply trying to enjoy the outdoors, this is effectively another tax on everyday life. Plus, there would be a penalty of up to $100,000 for anyone who conducts an open burn without a local government open burn permit.

State Representative Kevin Schmidt responded to the bill filing saying this:

"Families are struggling with affordability in our state, and enjoying a campfire is a way to unplug for many people, but now Illinois Democrats want to tax them for it,"said Schmidt. "This bill is a prime example of the majority party being out-of-touch with reality. Illinois has become a taxing empire and it's legislation such as this that is driving people to other states."

For a party that claims to be fighting for affordability, it's fair to ask: how does taxing campfires accomplish that? The answer is simple: it doesn't. Democrats are driving up the cost of living for Illinois families, but they tell the media they are focused on lowering the cost of living.

Actions over words:

  • Passed an $8 billion energy rate hike to subsidize unreliable green energy.
  • Approved a transit bailout that allows for toll increases and higher RTA sales taxes.
  • Enacted the largest budget in state history, relying on $700 million in new taxes.
  • 49 tax hikes since 2019

For Illinois Democrats, if families enjoy it, they will find a way to tax it. Whether it's energy, transportation, or now even a campfire, their policies continue to make Illinois less affordable.

House Republicans remain committed this legislative session to real solutions that address affordability by reigning in spending, cutting taxes, and opposing unnecessary taxes and fees like this one. Illinois families deserve relief, not more taxes and mandates.

Illinois energy costs expected to increase as Pritzker considers bill

Illinois House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch says conversations about energy policy will continue, even with a measure pending the governor's signature.

Welch, D-Hillside, told The Center Square that the energy bill lawmakers approved in October will work to lower energy costs. The measure puts more emphasis on alternative energy like batteries and also lifts the nuclear moratorium.

But, a study released by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and others said Illinois will have energy shortages if it continues…continue reading.
