Grand Boulevard's St. Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church would be designated as an official Chicago landmark under a proposal forwarded to City Council today by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks.
The Tudor Revival church building at 4644 S. Dearborn St. was constructed in two phases and completed in 1925. It is the first and only dedicated house of worship for St. Paul C.M.E., which was established in 1907 and is the oldest Christian Methodist Episcopal congregation in Chicago.
The design by the firm Ecklund, Fugard and Knapp reflects the architectural traditions of the Methodist faith and was inspired by the former headquarters of the C.M.E. church in Jackson, Tennessee.
The landmark designation would protect all exterior elevations of the church building.
