Cathedral City’s Discover Digest

The Oohs, the Aahs… and the Rules of the Road This Halloween Season
As the days grow shorter and the nights stretch longer, it's time for a quick seasonal reminder - not just about turning your clocks back Sunday for Daylight Saving Time but about staying safe on our roads during these darker evenings.
This time of year, brings plenty of oohs and aahs - from spooky Halloween decorations to sparkling porch lights and costumed kids parading through our neighborhoods. But behind the wonder and excitement, there's also increased risk on our roads.
Here's what we're asking of all drivers and pedestrians in our community:
Slow Down in Construction Zones
Our contract crews are actively working on infrastructure improvement projects, including road rehabilitation and the addition of new bikeways to support safer, more accessible transportation for all. These work zones can be especially hard to see after dark, so please reduce your speed, follow posted signage, and use extra caution when driving through active construction areas.
Specifically, we're currently constructing two key Capital Improvement Active Transportation Program (ATP) Projects:
  • Whispering Palms Trail Class III Bike Route - Rehabilitation of Whispering Palms Trail from 30th Avenue to Dinah Shore Drive, with the addition of a Class III Bike Route.
  • Perez Road Class IV Separated Bikeway - Constructing a physically protected bikeway to create a safer experience for both cyclists and drivers from Cathedral Canyon Drive to Date Palm Drive.
Be Alert, Especially Around Crosswalks
With nightfall arriving earlier, visibility decreases - especially during peak commute hours. Slow down and double-check for pedestrians at intersections and in neighborhoods.
Watch for Trick-or-Treaters
Halloween is this Friday, and little ghouls and goblins will be out after dark. Kids are excited and often unpredictable - please drive with extra caution this week of Halloween, especially in residential areas.
Headlights On, Distractions Off
Turn on your headlights earlier in the evening and keep your eyes on the road. Drowsy or distracted driving is especially dangerous in low-light conditions.
Pedestrians: Be Seen to Be Safe
If you're out walking or trick-or-treating, wear reflective clothing or carry a flashlight. Glow sticks aren't just festive - they're functional!
Daylight Saving Reminder
Daylight Saving Time ends at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 2. Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour - and take a moment to check your vehicle's headlights, brake lights, and tires too.
The changing season is beautiful, mysterious, and yes - a little spooky. Let's keep the frights where they belong (on the front lawn!) and make sure our roads remain safe for everyone.
Thank you for doing your part to make Cathedral City a safer, more mindful place to live and drive.
From your Cathedral City Public Works Department team, stay safe and enjoy the season.
