Former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Delivers Inaugural Lecture for ERIA School of Government Leadership Series

Jakarta, 18 September 2024: The ERIA School of Government welcomed H.E. Prof. Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who delivered the inaugural lecture of the ERIA School of Government Leadership Lecture Series on 18 September 2024 at ERIA's office in Senayan, Jakarta.

In his remarks, Indonesia's sixth president reflected on Asia's complex and multifaceted nature today, addressing the challenges the region faces and offering insights on how its countries can work together for a more peaceful and prosperous future.

Yudhoyono highlighted Asia's significant economic growth and technological advancement, noting that it is home to some of the world's fastest-growing economies. The region offers vast business opportunities across various sectors, driven by a young, educated workforce and abundant natural resources that are essential for both domestic use and export. However, he also pointed out the region's issues, such as geopolitical tensions - particularly in the South China Sea and Korean Peninsula - along with economic inequalities and climate change.

Yudhoyono attempted to debunk the myth that 'Asian problems must be solved by Asia.' While acknowledging that Asian countries should take the lead in addressing their own challenges, he emphasised that certain issues require global cooperation. Recognising regional limitations and engaging with global partners, he argued, is crucial for sustainable solutions.

Regarding ASEAN, Yudhoyono recognised its vital role in fostering dialogue and cooperation amidst complex regional dynamics. He stressed the importance of ASEAN remaining united and proactive without necessarily choosing sides in global rivalries.

In offering recommendations to Asian leaders, Yudhoyono emphasised the need for diplomatic sensitivity, asserting that managing regional tensions requires mutual respect and constructive dialogue. To spur economic growth, he suggested enhancing trade agreements and implementing policies and partnerships that encourage cross-border investments. Specifically for ASEAN, he advocated for the continued implementation of the ASEAN Connectivity Master Plan.

The ERIA School of Government Leadership Lecture Series will continue to feature prominent leaders from across ASEAN. Prof. Nobuhiro Aizawa, Dean and Managing Director of the ERIA School of Government, expressed the school's aspiration to become a platform for the world to learn from Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

'ERIA aims to make this region and Jakarta not only the epicentre of growth but also the epicentre of governance,' Aizawa stated. 'The oral history book and the leadership lecture are designed to encourage dialogue across countries and generations.'

ERIA President Tetsuya Watanabe, also in attendance, reaffirmed the school's goals to share ASEAN's unique governance experiences with the world, nurture regional interests, and position Southeast Asia as a model for governance and leadership.

Yudhoyono's lecture coincided with the launch of Standing Firm for Indonesia's Democracy: An Oral History of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, a book co-edited by Prof. Aizawa. The publication features interviews with Yudhoyono, offering insights into his leadership journey and decision-making processes as a military leader, cabinet minister, and president.
