Today's ouster of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary marks the fourth high-level Trump administration official to leave in less than three months amid Donald Trump's historically low approval ratings and chaos at the Department of Health and Human Services.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reportedly made the decision to fire Makary, as the rift between the Trump-Vance administration and RFK Jr.'s Make America Healthy Again movement has grown. MAHA is turning away from Republicans in the wake of broken promises and betrayals from the White House. Trump also recently pulled the nomination of Casey Means, a supporter of RFK Jr., to be surgeon general, after she failed to secure enough support in the Senate.
Meanwhile, under RFK Jr.'s leadership, countless jobs within HHS remain vacant, including 80% of the top posts at the Centers for Disease Control. After Trump fired CDC Director Susan Monarez in August 2025, the agency still has no confirmed director. Current and former senior CDC officials have said that work at the agency has ground to a halt, and experts warned that this leadership vacuum leaves the U.S. dangerously unprepared for any potential public health crises.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
"Under Donald Trump and RFK Jr.'s leadership, our public health agencies have been in total chaos, with constant staff turnover and vacancies, putting children and families in harm's way. As Trump faces record-low approval ratings and a fracturing political coalition, he's firing yet another administration official and throwing the public health system into even more chaos. Trump and RFK Jr. have gambled with our public health system and undermined trust in critical agencies - they have no business being anywhere near Americans' healthcare."
